EMT Boot Camp Preparations

You have chosen to embark on an intensive 14-day EMT Boot Camp to prepare for an entry-level career as an Emergency Medical Technician. The course will cover basic anatomy and physiology, the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, medical emergencies, trauma, pediatrics, geriatrics and other vital topics. In addition to strenuous coursework, you will also complete rigorous training in emergencies, including life-threatening conditions. Through a combination of conceptual study and hands-on training, you will be prepared to treat people in a variety of onsite and clinical settings.

The faculty and staff at Unitek EMT look forward to helping you reach your education goals and transition into the healthcare field well trained, prepared and motivated.

Classroom Dress Code

On the first day of on-campus orientation, you will be issued four (4) Unitek uniform polo shirts. You will be required to wear these polo shirts in the classroom and skills lab setting. Pants need to be black or dark blue. EMS-style cargo pants or Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) pants are preferred, however, Dickies-style work pants are also acceptable. EMS-style cargo pants will be required for the clinical setting. Footwear consisting of black mid-ankle boots with a black sole are required. Steel-toed boots are recommended. Sandals, flip-flops, high-heel footwear or tennis shoes are not acceptable. Black EMS or tactical belt, and wristwatch with a second hand is highly advised.

Immunizations

Prior to arriving to the Unitek EMT campus, you should have completed the following procedures:

  • MMR vaccination
  • The Hepatitis B series (at least started)
  • Tuberculosis skin test (within the last six months)

If you have tested positive for tuberculosis in the past, you will need to bring all necessary medical records (normally a chest x-ray interpretation) to prove you are not actively fighting tuberculosis. If you do not have documentation of the MMR vaccination or Hepatitis B series, you can request a “titer” from your physician, which will test you for your immunity against the diseases.

Proof of your immunizations and tests are required prior to your arrival. The items should be uploaded in the Student Enrollment Portal. If you did not receive a response that Unitek received the proof then also bring copies with you on the first day. IF YOU DO NOT UPLOAD THESE ITEMS PRIOR TO YOUR ARRIVAL, YOU WILL BE UNABLE TO COMPLETE YOUR CLINICAL ROTATIONS AND THUS UNABLE TO OBTAIN COURSE COMPLETION.

Air Travel

Students are responsible for coordinating their own travel.  Students that are flying in should arrive the day before their scheduled class in order to guarantee on time arrival to the first day of class.

If you are flying out on the last day of class, do not schedule a flight earlier than 9pm as students will not be allowed to leave class early.

Your First Day

Students are expected to show up in uniform to the Unitek Campus by 7:45am on the day of your scheduled class. You will be provided with books, lecture materials, and handouts upon arrival.  Students are expected to bring their own notepads and writing utensils to class.

Meals

Lunch will be provided by Unitek at 12pm and dinner at 6pm each day you are on campus.  Please note that provided meals may not accommodate dietary restrictions, food allergies and intolerances. If you want something that is not on the Unitek menu, please be prepared to purchase these items on your own.

Students may bring snacks and non-alcoholic beverages with them to consume throughout the day. There are refrigerators available for student use as needed.  During the clinical phase of your training, please bring sufficient funds to purchase food or plan to bring your lunch to the clinical setting.

Final Day of Class

On the last day of class, NREMT Psychomotor Skills Testing will take place. If you successfully pass the course, you will be given your course completion certificate before you leave. If you are traveling by air, make sure to arrange for flights late enough to allow plenty of time to get to the airport and checked in per airport guidelines.

Felonies

The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) has a Felony Conviction Policy. If you have a felony, it is strongly recommended that you read and understand the policy and take any necessary actions on your part. The Felony Conviction Policy can be read here: https://www.nremt.org/rwd/public/document/policy-criminal

Any prospective student with a criminal background must understand that it may prevent them from obtaining a licence in their chosen field. When a criminal background must be fully investigated, it may take up to one year or longer in order to obtain a decision from the licencing board. Any student with a criminal background should check with their local EMS authority for specific information on their standings on various criminal background situations.

Disability Accommodations

It is strongly recommended that you read and understand NREMT Disability Accommodations Policy and take any actions needed on your part. https://www.nremt.org/rwd/public/document/policy-accommodations

The healthcare field requires good mental and physical abilities. Any prospective student who has a known medical or physical disability should inform their account manager so that a meeting with the program director may be set up. The program director will be able to help the student assess their disability to identify whether the disability will affect the student’s ability to perform the training and job duties. The program director will inform a prospective student of any disabilities related limitations they will face in attempting to complete their program requirements and successfully gain employment.
